The fifth issue of PhotoWalk introduces Chiang Mai, one of my favourite cities in the world.

It has long been known for its excellent culture of hospitality. You will never get bored in Chiang Mai, where you can visit beautiful ancient temples and unique museums; view the striking mountainous landscape; experience traditional Thai massages; try local cuisines at street markets; chill out at bustling backpacker bars, and enjoy live music at reggae, blues and rock venues… If you feel lack inspiration in your life, go to Chiang Mai!

MAP & ROUTE

The historical city of Chiang Mai is quite a diverse place, with different neighbourhoods have very distinct personalities. At its heart is the beautiful Old City. Outside its almost perfectly square moat and ancient city walls is the bustling Night Bazaar, the peaceful Riverside, the modern Nimman Road. On the suburban areas, there are also some interesting sightseeing spots, like Chiang Mai Zoo; The nearby town Chiang Rai is also worth a visit.

OLD CITY

There are many ancient temples inside the old city, just wondering around aimlessly, and you will get to know the traditional lifestyle of Thai people.

 ⭐  A well-known local brand for beverages

 ⭐  Plumeria flowers are everywhere

NIMMAN ROAD

Nimman Road is alive with fashionable restaurants, cafés, bars, shops and boutique hotels. It definitely gives Chiang Mai a new angle, far removed from the traditional Thai sensibilities found in other areas of Thailand’s so-called ‘Rose of the North’.

⭐  A small craft shop called "PLAYWORKS"
 ⭐  Smoothie from Cheevit Cheeva
⭐  Lovely ice-cream from Coco Corner
 ⭐  Soda drink from D.O.M

Now it's time to have a cup of coffee! As one of the world’s largest coffee producers, Thailand has become a must visit for coffee drinkers, while Nimman Road in Chiangmai offered a wide spectrum of cafes and top-notch beans, from simple dessert menus in alleyway cafes to masterfully crafted afternoon tea sets.

RIVRERSIDE

On the side of Mae Ping River, spaces teaming with artistic sensibilities have spung up one after another, forming a community that draws urban creators who are enthusiastic about art and culture.

Night Bazaar

Different from the food offered at shopping mall food courts, street stalls are where locals grab a quick meal—where the true local food is; while the night bazaar near the old city is the best place for you to try some "authentic" Thai food

—5 —
Chiang Mai Zoo

Although not the first thing that comes to mind when most people think of the city, the Chiang Mai Zoo is surprisingly interesting. Covering 200 acres of land in the foothills of Doi Suthep and providing excellent views of the city in addition to its fascinating wildlife exhibits, Chiang Mai Zoo is certainly worth a visit, especially if you've had your fill of temples

Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai City remains a sleepy provincial town with a pleasant atmosphere. Compared to its sister town Chiang Mai, it has a more relaxed and down-to-earth feel but is never short on historical and cultural attractions of its own.

⭐  The way to Chiang Rai
⭐  Wat Rong Khun - White Temple

This bizarre-looking white temple located about five km south of Chiang Rai City is the brainchild of Chiang Rai-born visual artist and painter Chalermchai Kositpipat. He brings an unconventional approach to temple architecture, fusing elements from his own imagination (white, not gold, as a pure colour to embody the sacredness of temples) with orthodox Buddhist teachings about heaven, hell, karma and earthly sins.

 ⭐  Wat Ban Temple

The Wat Ban Den located North of the city is one of Chiang Mai’s most remarkable temples. One of the most imposing structures of the Wat Ban Den is a very large Lanna style teak wood viharn with a three tiered roof. The viharn is an attractive building with its blue roof and golden barge boards, decorated with intricate wood carvings.
